As the year is coming to a close and everyone is commenting on the latest Game of The Year Award speculations we decided to take a step back and discuss everything that happened during 2013 in the Fallout world. Should we expect Fallout 4 in 2014? When will Fallout 4 be released? Is the development of the game certain? What did the fans of the franchise got so excited about during 2013? What is a rumor and what is fact? These are all questions we are going to answer in our special A Year in Rumors: Fallout 4 edition.
Everything started with a simple twee t back in January by voice actor Erik Todd Dellums. He voiced Galaxy News Radio DJ Three Dog in Fallout 3.
Although fans got pretty excited about the tweet believing it was a probable conformation of the development of Fallout 4, Bethesda did not comment on the rumor. After the rumor became viral Erik Todd Dellums wrote yet another tweet in a response to a fan saying he was given official permission to release the tease. Later on Dellums retweeted another fan, who mentioned that we may be seeing Three Dog not in Fallout 4, but rather in a Fallout movie.
During the summer the hype around Fallout 4 was not as strong. However, rumors around the next game in the franchise were reborn a few weeks ago, back in November with the appearance of The Survivor 2299 web site. The site was basically an alternate reality game giving clues and getting fans of Fallout 4 excited. Later on, the hype went up when a trademark was registered in Europe.
The Survivor 2299 was keeping the faith of the fans alive, promising new information later in December. The VGX created additional hype as fans believed that an announcement was going to take place at the awards, but it did not. As fans later on learned, all the anticipation connected to the teaser site also turned out pointless as The Survivor 2299 site was proven to be a hoax.

When all faith seemed lost, Kotaku came to save the day as it released seemingly official voice acting casting scripts associated with Fallout 4. The leaked documents are referencing a project called ‘Institue’; however, it is believed that this is a mere code-name for the next game in the Fallout franchise. The facts are that the script files seem to be quite real as they are referencing quite a few details connected with the Fallout series. If the documents are official then Fallout 4 will be set in Massachusetts.
Bethesda Studios did not comment on any on the rumors, except the Survivor 2299 web site hoax, saying that if you don’t hear the news through an official channel it is probably not true.
As a whole 2013 has been quite the year for fans of the Fallout franchise. Full of rumors, ups and downs and unofficial announcements we still can’t be a hundred percent sure about the development of the game. Should we expect Fallout 4 in 2014? – Probably not. But could we be certain that the game is in development? It is up to you to decide – a registered trademark and leaked scripts referencing Fallout 4 –is it enough?
Until you decide, you can enjoy the short fan-made film (if you haven’t already) Fallout; Nuka Break – Red Star. Nuka Break is fan-fiction that features webisode series with two seasons and two short films. What is interesting about ‘Red star’ is that it has the creative input of Fallout Developers, such as Tim Cain and Chris Avellone.
And until we hear more about Fallout 4 remember this: Tunnel Snakes Rule!
