Star Wars: The Old Republic Galactic Starfighter is live
The new expansion pack for Star Wars: The Old Republic, entitled “Galactic Starfighter” has been released for subscribing players. Those that pay for the free-to-play MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe can now battle it out in 12 vs 12 pvp space battles. Preferred status players will get their hands on the new content on the 14th of July, while free to play players will have to wait until the 4th of February to enjoy the features of the new expansion pack.
The second expansion pack for The Old Republic comes as a response to players who have been asking for a more complex space combat system. Up until now, space missions in Star Wars: The Old Republic were limited to single-player missions, that gave players arguably useless rewards. Many players were also turned off by the limited control system, lack of ship customization options, and repetitive gameplay, factors that made space combat in the MMORPG somewhat obsolete during the end-game phase of the game.
The new expansion pack aims to solve this, introducing ship customization options, player versus player combat (I’m still surprised it took this long for Bioware to actually implement this feature into the game), and new game modes. The new maps for space combat are called The Lost Shipyards, where players have to either attack of defend this Imperial facility, and Kuat Mesas, where the battle will be raging over valuable resources. Players will receive 3 types of ships, replacing the previous ships used to travel around the galaxy. Each new ship has a specific role to play and has advantages and disadvantages. Gunships rely on extreme firepower, Scout ships are fast and agile and Strike fighters are a mixture of both, being designed for dogfights and direct combat.
Players will not only receive rewards in XP in credits, both applying to their characters outside the ship, but also a new type of reward called “requisition”, used for upgrading ships in terms of visual appeal, weapons and abilities.
