rand Theft Auto V is the game that shocked the entertainment industry. It managed to surpass the Hollywood movies in revenues and sales and broke no less than seven world records. That’s why we can hardly refer to Gta 5 as a simple video game as Rockstar North has managed to do exactly what Hollywood dreams for decades: they created an interactive movie. The users are the main characters; they can interact and create their own stories inside a huge and full of adventures city.

“GTA totally deserves to be recognized as an icon of modern culture, and we’re thrilled to be able to feature the game in the record books. Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won,” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records. While the game managed to break no less than seven Guinness World Records, the editor’s words were nevertheless surprising.

But Gta 5 does not stop from its way of becoming the best selling entertainment franchise of all times. Thus, for a second month in a row, Gta 5 won the title of the Top Selling Video Game. According to NPD Group, the game sold nearly 1,1 million units during October.

According to the official numbers, Gta 5 raked in over $800 million in its first day of release. The cash flow increased exponentially and in just three days, the game reached a milestone of 1 billion US dollars.

While NPD no longer releases the number of units sold by each video game title, it is quite harder to grasp how successful Gta 5 is and how much the gaming industry has improved over the last months.

“Growth in videogame software sales over the last few months has reversed negative year-to-date trends caused by declines seen earlier in the year with videogame software sales currently flat to last year,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. “With the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, we hope to see positive trends over November and December which would lead to an increase in software sales for the year,” he continued. And in lack of any real facts and numbers, we will have to believe him as a man true to his words.
