Nintendo head honcho Reggie Fils-Aime has given a sneak peak at what the future may hold for the Wii. While plans for a second console are still some way off, Fils-Aime told CNBC that the Wii 2 – whenever it may materialise – will be all about the capability.
“Over twenty six million consumers have bought a Wii,” he noted, “so the consumer is saying that, for them, the quality of the visual is not nearly as important as the overall entertainment – the overall value of that experience and that’s really what’s propelled us.” Fils-Aime goes on to say that, “In terms of what the future holds, we’ve gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home console will not be simply to make it HD, but to add more and more capability.”
However, he cautioned that that is not going to be happening any time soon. “We’ll do that when we (have) totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii and we are nowhere near doing that yet, so lots of ongoing opportunity for the consumers in the current generation.” Rumours of a “Wii 2” have been circulating for a couple of years now, but Fils-Aime’s latest comments seem to lend yet more credence to the simple reality that Nintendo do not appear to be in any rush at all to replace their existing – and highly successful – console any time soon, despite apparently endless stories to the contrary.
