The id computer game “Rage” runs at a faster rate on the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game than it does on the Playstation version, the latest issue of Edge magazine has revealed. The PS3 version runs at just 20 to 30fps, while the Xbox 360 uses id’s new Tech 5 engine to make it run at a framerate of 60fps, equivalent to the PC incarnation. Id’s John Carmack told Edge, “The PS3 lags a little behind in terms of getting the performance out of it… The rasteriser is just a little bit slower – no two ways about that,” he admitted. “The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3.”

The PS3 version was originally thought to be the more technically capable than the Xbox edition, largely because of id’s success in being able to put the massive game on to one single player Blu-ray disc, as opposed to the four DVDs needed for the Xbox game, but Carmack has assured fans that the PS3 rendering will ultimately be made to match the other platforms. “Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform… The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we’re confident that we’re going to get that.”
